Michael J. Tarr received his PhD from M.I.T. in 1989. He is currently the Fox Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and a Professor of Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences at Brown University. He is the recipient of the 1997 APA Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology in the Area of Cognition/Human Learning and the 2003 Troland Research Award from the National Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on human visual processing and cognition using a wide variety of methodologies. Multisensory Integration: How Visual Experience Shapes Spatial Perception
The localisation of auditory and tactile events is strongly affected by visual information, reflecting the dominant role of vision in spatial perception. New research suggests that early visual experience is critical for the establishment of such multisensory links.
متن کاملSeeing structure: Shape skeletons modulate perceived similarity.
An intrinsic part of seeing objects is seeing how similar or different they are relative to one another. This experience requires that objects be mentally represented in a common format over which such comparisons can be carried out. What is that representational format? Objects could be compared in terms of their superficial features (e.g., degree of pixel-by-pixel overlap), but a more intrigu...
متن کاملVisual Shape and Implications for Visual Cognition
Human vision organizes object shapes in terms of parts and their spatial relationships. Converging experimental evidence suggests that parts are computed rapidly and early in visual processing. We review theories of how human vision parses shapes. In particular, we discuss the minima rule for finding part boundaries on shapes, geometric factors for creating part cuts, and a theory of part salie...

متن کاملDivine Vision: Islamic Arts and Horizontal Thought
Islamic arts are often identified by their abstract compositions based on geometric principles and spiritual concepts. Using artworks from different eras, this paper highlights the presence of a particular model of thought in Islamic arts in which the hierarchy of perspectival vision is abolished. The main argument is based on the ability of some artworks to be looked at from any angle while ma...
متن کاملShape-specific perceptual learning in a figure-ground segregation task
What does perceptual experience contribute to figure-ground segregation? To study this question, we trained observers to search for symmetric dot patterns embedded in random dot backgrounds. Training improved shape segmentation, but learning did not completely transfer either to untrained locations or to untrained shapes. Such partial specificity persisted for a month after training. Interestin...
